The Alhambra, A Virtual
Tour of a Medieval Palace in Islamic Spain
Description: The Alhambra sits on a plateau in the Sierra
Nevada Mountains just outside Granada, Spain. The earliest dated
Islamic structure on the site dated from the ninth century,
although traces of Roman and Iberian ruins are present as well.
Numerous building campaigns from the 11th rhough the 14th centuries
enlarged and extended the palace complex. It is the best-preserved
Islamic palace complex and a true masterpiece of world architecture.
The Alhambra program explores the multi-layered architectural
history of the palace complex using a combination of QTVR, still
photography and video excerpts, emphasizing both the spatial
configuration of the site as well as the rich architectural
detail that distinguishes many parts of the complex. This web
site is part of our larger program developing resources for
the history of architecture with funding from the National Endowment
for the Humanities.
